As we head into the new year it’s always good to think about trying new things, and if you have never tried wine from South Africa, then this year you really should start!! But why would it be a good idea to start drinking these delicious wines? Allow me to elaborate:
Incredible Value: As far as getting the most for your money, South Africa is surely one of your best bets in the winemaking industry.
Consistent high quality and fair prices.
Fantastic Variety: Although South Africa is primarily known for their Pinotage (a hybrid of Pinot Noir & Cinsault) they also produce wonderful Cabernets, Merlots as well as some delicious “Bordeaux” style red blends. Their most popular white is Chenin Blanc, but you can also find Chardonnays, Sauvignon Blanc's, Moscato’s & Rose’s. Ports and Sparkling wines are also prominent as well. Rich History: Being the 9th largest wine producing region in the world with over 60 wine appellations to their credit (Stellenbosch & Paarl being the best known) 95% of the wine produced there is sustainably grown and follow organic practices.
Here are some of my favorites you can buy here at NJWineSeller:
- BLACKWATER SYRAH 2015- $24.99- Stewed cherries and earthiness on the nose, the wine is densely packed but not heavy with flavors of cranberry, cracked pepper and mocha. A beautiful wine to pair with Lamb.
- KWV CATHEDRAL CABERNET 2015-$13.99- Earthy mint & blackcurrant sit alongside bold blackberry, cassis and boysenberry flavors. Notes of berry compote, dried fynbos and green peppercorn all unfold on the long, lingering finish. Enjoy with a nice Ribeye steak.
- ROODEBERG RED BLEND 2017-$11.99- A blend of Cabernet, Merlot, Shiraz & Petit Verdot this red blend is as smooth as they come. Red fruits are the star of this blend, but you will pick up some cedar and plums as well. A perfect dinner companion with grilled meats.
So come on down to NJWineSeller and ask for our top picks from South Africa. Cheers!!
